The Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) revised Carcass Dressed Mass (CDM) rates for EU-eligible cattle to the public and introduced the contracting of private suppliers of the highest-graded carcasses (also EU-eligible) to the BMC.
These changes take effect immediately.
1. New CDM Rates for EU-Eligible Cattle: The new rates align with both local and global benchmarks and aim to promote equity and incentivize the supply of quality cattle to the BMC.
2. Contracting of High-Volume EU-Eligible Suppliers: These contracts are for private suppliers capable of providing Super Prime (SP) and Sound Super (SS) carcass grades, with a minimum supply requirement of 3,000 cattle per year.
The BMC wishes to confirm that uncontracted farmers (referred to as walk-in suppliers) will continue to have unrestricted access to the BMC’s EU-eligible abattoir(s) in Lobatse and will benefit from the revised CDM rates.
The current rate for non-EU/Other Markets cattle will remain unchanged, and farmers within this category will continue to receive support for free transportation of their cattle from designated pick-up points.
The BMC also confirms that all uncontracted farmers, as well as those wishing to convert to EU eligibility, will continue to have access to the “Maja-A-Ikgorosa” cattle feeding scheme to ensure equitable distribution of extension services and optimal price discovery.
